BMR CALCULATOR USAGE EXPLAINED

The term BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. The BMR calculator is a tool that helps to calculate how many calories or energy your body needed when the body is inactive. This is measured based on height, weight, age, and gender. Therefore, there are different ways to calculate the BMR of both males and females.

WHAT IS BMR?

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of energy that your body needed while you were at rest. It is defined as the amount of energy that your body required to fulfil vital functions like controlling the body temperature, breathing activities, blood circulation, nutrient processing, cell production, circulation, etc. the organs which use the most of the energy is the brain, liver, and central nervous system.

A healthy BMR differs from person to person. Since the basal rate is based largely on the pumping of blood, breathing, etc. the BMR doesn’t vary much. However, the increase in muscle mass will increase BMR. This why? Because the body requires more energy to build muscle and therefore it increases BMR. Also, when you will have a lot of muscle mass you will burn more calories.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BMR AND RMR

Both of the terms have a slight difference. Where BMR stands for basal metabolic rate RMR stands for resting metabolic rate. BMR calculator measures only the basic processes like breathing rate, blood circulation rate, and temperature regulation rate. Whereas, RMR measures the energy released due to digestion, and non-exercise activities like picking a glass for drinking water, lifting a folk to eat, etc.

To calculate RMR the Harris-Benedict formula is used instead of the Mifflin St Jeor formula.

WHAT IS BMR CALCULATOR AND HOW TO CALCULATE BMR?

BMR calculator is a tool to estimate the minimum amount of calories you require to measure the number of calories, your body is subject to take daily. While computing BMR it is advised to add your energy expenditure, the calories that your body has released from walking, playing, communicating, etc. but do not add those from the release of energy through digestion as it will calculate the total energy expenditure.

How to calculate BMR from the BMR calculator? Follow this step by step methods:

1)     Measure your weight and type it in the weight field of the BMR calculator.

2)     Measure your height and fill that into the height field of the BMR calculator.

3)     Type your age in the age field.

4)     Now the last step is to select your gender.

The formula which needs to be used is the Mifflin St Jeor formula which provides the exact measurement.

BMR (kcal/day) = 10 * weight(kg) + 6.25* height(cm) – 5*age(years)+ s(kcal/day)

Where s = +5 for males and -161 for females.

BMR calculation for man

The BMR calculator for calculating the BMR according to Mifflin St Jeor.

We will use the above formula to calculate the Basal Metabolic Rate. For example, a man whose age is 55 years around 5 feet 7 inches tall whose weight is 70 kgs wants to calculate his BMR. This is how he can measure:

1)     Convert the imperial values to metric values. Now 5 feet 7 inches will be around 170.18 cm.

2)     Now use the formula and input all the details as: 10 * 70 + 6.25 * 170.18 – 5 * 55 years + 5 = 1493.625 kcal/day.

This was the simplest way to calculate the BMR. You too can try it on and be an expert in regulating yourself.

BMR CALCULATION FOR WOMEN

the same procedure will be followed to calculate the BMR using the BMR calculator formula. For example, a female model whose age is 25 years, height 180 cm, and weight around 50 kgs wants to calculate her BMR. This is how she can calculate her BMR:

use the formula and in place of s input the number -161. The BMR will be:

10 * 50 kgs + 6.25 * 180 – 5 * 25 -161 = 1339 kcal/day.

THE INFLUENCE ON BMR CALCULATOR AND ITS CALCULATIONS DUE TO FACTORS INFLUENCING BMR

Each cell requires a constant supply of energy. Studies show that the more amount of cells your body has the more your body weighs. The increase in weight will give a rise to an increase in BMR. But only weight is not responsible for an increase in BMR. Following are the factors which affect the BMR calculator due to factors affecting BMR:

1) FAT MASS

Fat mass affects BMR as the name suggests it is the weight of all the accumulated fat in the body. it will result in high BMR if the body fat continues to rise.

2) GENETICS:

Every person has different body structures due to their genes and so does the BMR. The basal metabolic rate is not similar among people it varies and so the effect is shown in the BMR calculator.

3) AGE

The increase in your age will result in to increase in your weight, height, and body structure which affects the basal metabolic rate. But the BMR tends to decrease as you get older due to the fall in body mass and muscles get weakened.

4) GENDER

Men have generally higher body mass as compared to women this is due to a higher amount of fat-free mass in men.

5) EXERCISE

The amount you exercise affects your body mass and so does the BMR. When you perform bodybuilding exercises it gives rise to muscle building due to which the fat mass will increase and so does the BMR.

6) PREGNANCY

When a woman is pregnant another life is taking place inside her body which is termed the fetus, as the fetus grows it takes food and other nutrients from the mother. The changes which happen inside a woman’s body due growth of the fetus and the fluctuation of hormones result in fluctuation in BMR and affect the BMR calculator.

7) HORMONES

Different bodies have different levels of hormones and so the fluctuation in hormones due to the various activities taking place inside the body affects the BMR.

8) EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE

In a colder or freezing environment, your body preserves the heat created by your body which increases BMR. Similarly, when the body temperature rises it results in a boost of energy due to the various chemical reactions taking place in the body which increases BMR.
